Don't let the bright green color of this smoothie scare you off! It has a tropical flavor that's actually sweet and fruity. I love this spinach smoothie with fruit because it requires little preparation, is made with very simple ingredients and has 8 grams of fiber!

This pineapple spinach smoothie is perfect for a quick energy boost on busy mornings or as an afternoon snack to keep you full until your next meal. Adding raw spinach to smoothies is such a great way to boost its fiber content and make it extra hydrating. Plus, you'll have one serving of veggies down for the day.

    Health benefits of spinach

    • Spinach has a high dietary fiber content. It's mostly made of insoluble fiber that bulks your stool and may prevent constipation.
    • Did you know that 91% of spinach is water? Hence why it shrinks so much when cooking.
    • It's very rich in nutrients and contains high amounts of vitamins, iron and calcium.
    • Spinach is known to support eye health, moderate blood pressure levels and fight oxidative stress. You can read more about the health benefits of spinach right here.

    Key ingredients and substitutions

Ingredients for a spinach fruit smoothie in small bowls with descriptive labels.
    • Fresh spinach is super healthy are barely noticeable in smoothies.
    • Banana helps obtain a really creamy smoothie with a velvety texture. Choose ripe bananas if you want your smoothie to be on the sweeter side.
    • Frozen pineapple helps cover the earthy spinach taste. Frozen fruits also replace ice cubes and make the smoothie extra cold without effort.
    • Frozen mango intensifies the tropical fruit flavor. You can also get a frozen tropical mix at the grocery store for convenience.
    • Freshly squeezed orange juice is great for flavor and extra vitamin C. You can replace it with coconut water to reduce the sugar content of the smoothie. Coconut milk would be a great alternative as well.

    Elo's tips

    1. Use baby spinach for a less fibrous texture.
    2. Switch things up by adding a different variety of fruits to this easy spinach smoothie recipe. However, I do recommend avoiding berries and red fruits if a brown-colored smoothie turns you off.
    3. The order in which you add your ingredients to your blender matter. Start with soft ingredients, such as juices and fresh fruit. Next add hard ingredients, including frozen fruit. Finally, add fibrous ingredients, such as leafy greens.
    4. If you don't have a powerful blender, make sure to run the frozen fruits shortly under warm water. This will slightly soften them and make the blending process easier.
    5. Freeze your smoothie mix. Cut fresh mangos, pineapple and bananas into small chunks. Add the right amount of each to a zip bag with the spinach and store them in your freezer. When you want a spinach smoothie you can pop everything in your blender with orange juice and you're done.

    Step-by-step instructions

Hand cutting a banana over a blender.

STEP 1: Add the soft ingredients to a high-speed blender. Start with the orange juice and cut in the banana.

All the ingredients in a high-speed blender in front a of a white tile background.

STEP 2: Next, add the frozen mango and pineapple. End with the spinach leaves. This makes the blending process easier and results in a smooth smoothie a lot quicker.

STEP 3: Blend until smooth. This should take about 30 seconds if you have a powerful blender.

STEP 4: Pour it into your favorite smoothie cup and drink it right away. You can also turn it into a smoothie bowl by adding your favorite toppings.

    Equipment I love

    1. I use this Kitchenaid high-speed blender almost daily. It is one of my best investments and still one of my favorite kitchen appliances to this day.
    2. I prefer glass straws over stainless steel ones as they are much easier to clean (you can see if they are some bits and pieces left). I personally never had one break!
    3. These Mason jar stainless steel lids with a straw hole are perfect if you like to drink your smoothie on the go. My favorite feature is the silicone plug that prevents my smoothies from leaking.

    Variation ideas

    • Protein powder – add a scoop to boost the protein content of your smoothie.
    • Chia seeds – add a tablespoon of chia seeds for healthy fats (more specifically omega-3 fatty acids).
    • Cocoa powder and frozen strawberries – swap the mango and the pineapple and make a rich chocolate strawberry spinach smoothie. I recommend using plant-based milk (e.g., almond milk) instead of orange juice in this case.
    • Peanut butter – a heaped tablespoon of peanut butter adds a nutty flavor. I prefer using coconut milk rather than fruit juice if adding nut butter.

    Frequently asked questions

How much spinach is a serving?

One serving of spinach is about two cups. This is true for most leafy greens.

Can you taste spinach in smoothies?

Although the color may suggest differently, you generally cannot taste a few handfuls of spinach in smoothies if they contain other fruits or sweet ingredients.

Can you use frozen spinach in smoothies?

You can use frozen spinach in smoothies but the flavor will be slightly different as the spinach has been cooked. You also only need about ⅓ of the amount of raw spinach.
