It's time for me to share the ultimate tortilla toaster hack that will bring your wraps to the next level! In this post, you will find detailed step-by-step instructions on how to fold your wrap and the right toaster temperature. Plus, I'm sharing my vegan version of the famous toasted wrap that makes an incredibly easy lunch or quick snack.
This toasted wrap recipe (also known as toaster-dilla on Tiktok) is made with red pesto, spinach, and vegan cheese. It comes together in 2 minutes in a toaster and will be a guaranteed hit amongst the whole family.

Key ingredients
- Tortilla wraps: You can use any tortillas you like. I recommend medium-sized ones, as the larger ones may not fit in your toaster once folded. I'm using gluten-free tortilla wraps. However, whole wheat or corn wraps work great if you're not on a gluten-free diet.
- Vegan cheese: For the perfect cheese pulls, you need your favorite vegan. Regular cheese works too if you're not plant-based.
- Toppings: I'm using vegan sun-dried tomato pesto for extra flavor and baby spinach for some extra greens. You can find more toaster wrap-filling ideas below.
Elo's tips
- Don't overfill your tortilla. Otherwise, you won't be able to fold it properly. I like to cut the cheese slices into quarters and place them on the tortillas as described below.
- Add a THIN layer of pesto. You don't want it to soak through the tortilla and drip inside your toaster. I've been there, and it's a mess to clean.
- Press your wrap flat. Make sure your folded wrap is pressed very flat (I just use my hands) to fit in the slot of your toaster.
- Adjust the temperature of your toaster. If your toaster usually gets very warm, start on a low heat setting. You can always toast the tortilla twice if needed.
- Eat it warm, when the cheese is all melted and gooey.
How to fold a wrap for the toaster
You may already be familiar with the "4 quadrant method" where you cut a slit into the tortilla and top each quadrant with different toppings. This folding method is different but equally delicious!
STEP 1: Add your toppings. Spread a thin layer of sun-dried tomato pesto at the top and bottom of the wrap. Add two small pieces of vegan cheese (I simply cut a regular slice in 4) and a few leaves of baby spinach. It is very important to leave a little bit of space at the center and sides of the wrap with this folding method.
STEP 2: Fold the sides towards the center.
STEP 3: Fold the wrap in half. Press it flat and make sure it fits into the slot of your toaster.
STEP 4: Toast your tortilla wrap. Put your toaster on medium heat (for me it is a 3 on a scale of 1 to 5) to prevent the tortilla from burning. Slide your folded tortilla into the slot of the toaster and pull down the lever.
Troubleshooting
If your wrap toast is not crispy and golden when it pops out of the toaster, toast it a second time. The cheese needs to be melted or at least start to melt.
If your toaster starts to smoke, press the stop button. Your toaster wrap is either already done and starting to burn, or a piece of cheese has come into contact with the heating part of the toaster and is creating smoke.
If that happens, remove the tortilla from the toaster and let the cheese cool down before gently scraping it away.
If you don't have a toaster, you can easily toast the wrap in a sandwich press or a non-stick frying pan. Place the wrap in a pan with a little bit of olive oil and toast it over medium-high heat until both sides are golden and the cheese starts to melt.
Storage
I don't recommend making these toaster wraps ahead of time. They take just 2 minutes to make and taste best when still warm and crispy.
You can store leftover wraps in an airtight container or wrapped in plastic wrap in the refrigerator for 2-3 days. Add a paper towel to absorb extra moisture.

- Smashed chickpeas and pickles: Finely dice some pickles. Smash the canned chickpeas with pickle juice, plant-based yogurt, and hot sauce. Add the diced pickles. Top your tortilla wrap with the mixture as described above, and toast.
- Guacamole and beans: Mash the avocado with a little bit of lime juice and salt. Mash the black beans. Add a thin layer of (vegan) sour cream, black beans, and avocado. Toast until crispy. It makes the perfect breakfast wrap for a busy morning.
- Mediterranean: Top your wrap with a thin layer of olive tapenade, leftover roasted veggies (e.g., bell peppers, zucchini), and arugula. Toast.
- Sweet toaster wrap: Spread peanut butter onto your wrap. Add thin banana slices and some chocolate shavings. Toast.
